The New York Rangers have secured their star goaltender, Igor Shesterkin, with a record-breaking eight-year, $92 million contract extension, carrying an average annual value (AAV) of $11.5 million. This deal, announced on December 6, 2024, makes Shesterkin the highest-paid goalie in NHL history, surpassing the previous record held by Carey Price’s $10.5 million AAV contract with the Montreal Canadiens.
Shesterkin, 28, has been a cornerstone for the Rangers since taking over the starting role. Over his career, he has played in 231 NHL games, boasting a .920 save percentage and a 2.48 goals-against average. His exceptional performance during the 2021-22 season earned him the Vezina Trophy, awarded to the league’s top goaltender, after posting a .935 save percentage and a 2.07 goals-against average through 53 games.
The contract extension reflects the Rangers’ commitment to building a competitive roster around Shesterkin. General Manager Chris Drury expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “We’re lucky to have him. We’re excited that he wanted to make the commitment to be with the Rangers for eight years.”
This significant investment in Shesterkin comes alongside strategic roster moves, including the trade of captain Jacob Trouba to the Anaheim Ducks, which freed up salary cap space to facilitate the goaltender’s extension.
