Vladimir Guerrero Jr., a cornerstone of the Blue Jays’ lineup, has been in discussions with the team regarding a substantial contract extension. Reports indicate that Guerrero is seeking a deal in the range of $400 million to $500 million, influenced by recent market trends such as Juan Soto’s record-setting $765 million contract with the New York Mets. The Blue Jays’ initial offer of approximately $340 million fell short of Guerrero’s expectations, leading to a stalemate in negotiations. Guerrero has expressed his desire to remain with the Blue Jays but acknowledges the business aspect of the sport, stating, “I want to be a Blue Jay for the rest of my career. But it’s free agency. It’s business. So I’m going to have to listen to 29 more teams and they’re going to have to compete for that.”
Bo Bichette, another integral player for the Blue Jays, had previously signed a three-year, $33.6 million contract ahead of the 2023 season, covering his arbitration years through the end of 2025. This agreement was designed to provide both the player and the team with financial certainty during his arbitration-eligible years.
