The Houston Astros have made a strategic addition to their coaching staff by hiring Tony Perezchica as their third-base and infield coach, as well as run-prevention coordinator. Perezchica previously served as the third-base coach for the Arizona Diamondbacks from 2017 to 2024.
Perezchica brings a wealth of experience to the Astros, having spent several seasons in the Diamondbacks organization as a Minor League manager, field coordinator, and infield coordinator from 2003 to 2016. A native of Mexicali, Mexico, he played parts of four seasons in the Major Leagues as an infielder with the San Francisco Giants (1988, 1990-91) and Cleveland (1991-92).
This hiring is part of the Astros’ efforts to strengthen their coaching staff under manager Joe Espada. Perezchica replaces Gary Pettis, whose contract was not renewed after serving as the third-base coach for the previous ten seasons. The Astros aim to leverage Perezchica’s extensive experience to enhance their infield defense and overall run prevention strategies.
In addition to Perezchica’s hiring, the Astros have promoted Jason Bell, who served as the quality assurance coach last season, to the role of Major League field coordinator/outfield coach. These moves reflect the organization’s commitment to bolstering their coaching staff with experienced professionals to maintain their competitive edge in the upcoming season.
